Suzie brings a strong academic foundation and a demonstrated commitment to access to justice and criminal law. She earned her Juris Doctor from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, where she conducted advanced research examining the criminal law defences available to victim-perpetrators of human trafficking and the impact of gender dynamics within the criminal justice system. She later completed the Global Professional Master of Laws at the University of Toronto, followed by a Master of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. Her graduate thesis explored the role of public inquiries into wrongful convictions and their contributions to systemic change in the criminal justice system.
Before joining Dawson Criminal Defence, Suzie gained valuable experience supporting individuals navigating the justice system through both frontline advocacy and community legal services. At the Zebra Child Protection Centre, she worked closely with the Edmonton Police Service, the RCMP, and Crown Prosecution Services, giving her valuable insight into how complex criminal investigations and prosecutions are conducted. Suzie coordinated court supports for child and youth witnesses, contributed to the redevelopment of witness preparation materials, and trained volunteers in preparing young witnesses to testify. This experience provided her with a unique understanding of the criminal justice process from multiple perspectives.
Suzie’s commitment to improving access to justice continued through her work with the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, where she managed volunteer programs, coordinated the free legal advice clinic, facilitated public legal education initiatives, and supported a range of community legal services. These experiences strengthened her understanding of the barriers individuals face in accessing legal assistance and reinforced her dedication to client-centred advocacy.
